garden inspired activities for the littles!

Fairy Garden Fun
Fairy Gardens are all the rage these days. They’re like a summer spin on Gingerbread houses. If your kids are old enough, pick up a little potting soil, some microgreens that sprout in just a few days and some sticks, rocks, moss, and feathers for a fun, natural backyard fairy garden like this one.

Food Based Fairy Gardens
Another fun idea is an edible fairy garden. It’s perfect if your toddler has a tendency to put all the things in their mouths and you’re worried about them eating dirt, moss and rocks. This fun food-based spin on a fairy garden might be just the thing for you!

Supplies:
• Dirt: Oreo Cookie crumbs as dirt
• Grass: Coconut (dyed green with food colouring)
• Stepping Stones: Sliced bananas
• Rocks: Plain raisins or yogurt covered raisins
• Ants on a log: Celery + peanut butter and raisins
•Flowers & Foliage: Berries, kiwi, broccolini
•Toadstools: Cut up a string cheese into 6 pieces and top them with half a cherry tomato
•Gummy Worms: We love this recipe for homemade gummy worms

Salt Dough Stepping Stones
Another fun garden inspired activity is creating your own stepping stone keepsakes to spruce up a flower bed. Capture precious memories of little fingers and toes by making salt dough stepping stones for the garden.
Whip up a big batch of salt dough and press into small plates to create a disc shape for the impression. You can also colour the dough with food colouring or leave it au natural for painting and decorating later.

Salt Dough Recipe:
Combine ingredients and knead until smooth and stretchy.
• 2 cups salt
• 2 cups all purpose flour
• 1 cup of warm water

Check out this tutorial from The Imagination Tree for full details on how to make the dough, do the impression and cook to harden.
